MID LAYER
The second layer, known as the mid, thermal, or performance layer, is a continuation of the base layer in managing moisture. However, the mid layer also provides thermal insulation. Mid layers work with the base layer to transfer moisture to the outer layer and are often made of the same hydrophobic materials, but with a more spacious weave. Fleece, especially microfiber fleece, works well as a mid layer because it has moisture-transfer qualities, boasts a high warmth-to-weight ratio, and is not bulky. Some thermal layer fabrics use quilted weaves or other patterns that incorporate air pockets for increased warmth.
